The use of wood pastures, grazing forests, forest strips and alleys in ecological farming
Traditional land use methods are rediscovered in modern farming. This hundred-year-old daily practice delivers new approaches for the farmers of today to change their approach for the nature conservationist requirements. These methods include the complex range of silvo-pastoral land use, such as grazing forests, wood pastures, groves and allees. Farmers need to adapt to climate change; therefore, new drought tolerant species and new agricultural techniques are required for the successful future of crop production and livestock management. Hot summers, extreme weather and declining fertility already cause severe problems in the agricultural sector. Organic farming is more vulnerable than conventional systems because irrigation and nutrient replenishment are very limited. We gathered essential knowledge that may help to adapt to global warming and ease forage management. These silvo-pastoral techniques represent new perspectives to produce adequate quantity and quality feed in dry conditions.
