Analysis of the usability of SPAD and NDVI readings in view of the relative chlorophyll content in maize

Nowadays one of the most important objectives of the Hungarian agriculture are to produce and keep the principles of sustainability. The integration of precision technologies gives an excellent opportunity for this. This is especially true about fertilisation techniques which are one of the most expensive interventions. Furthermore

it includes a large environmental risk.

During our work, we compared two relative methods of the phytogenic chlorophyll content determination and made recommendations for precision farming. A maize (Zea mays L.) genotype was examined at two different capability areas in a field experiment. Weather factors were the same during the investigation. SPAD-502 (Minolta, Japan) and a handheld GreenSeeker (Trimble, USA) device were used to determine the relative chlorophyll content. We also defined the absolute chlorophyll content.

Plants were randomly chosen for the survey of the different parameters. Four leaves per plant with different ages were involved in our measurements. According to our results, we can conclude that the two devices are suitable for detection of the effects of nutrient deficiencies. However, there are differences in the accuracy of the given devices. The synchronizing of the values measured by the two devices and the investigation of the reliability of results can help farmers and scientists make a better purchase decision.
