Effect of plant conditioning on some quality parameters of sweet corn grown under salt affection

The effect of two plant conditioners and irrigation water with 600 mg l-1 on some quality parameters of sweet corn (Dessert R78 F1) considered the most important from consumer point of view was investigated in our experiment. We studied the improvement possibility of the quality of plants suffered from abiotic stress by the application of plant conditioners. Explorer 21 plant conditioner must be mixed into the soil and aids root growth, while Wuxal Ascofol is a foliar fertiliser enhancing stress tolerance ability of plants. The indicator crop applied was grown in six simple drainage lysimeters of which three were filled with sandy soil, the other three with clay soil.

On the basis of our results, it can be established that Wuxal Ascofol plant conditioner had positive effect on most of the investigated parameters. Due to its application, the dry matter content and the water soluble dry matter content (BRIX) of the plants affected by salt stress on clay soil increased.

The same positive effect we found in the cases of the dietary fibre content and kernel hardness compared to the control and the Explorer 21 treatments. Further favourable impact was that less Na+ accumulated in the ears of sweet corn when Wuxal Ascofol was applied.

No significant differences could be figured out between the investigated soils in terms of the plant quality parameters we measured.

We consider our results to be important even from the practical point of view as they can contribute to the development of plant production technology, as well as human nutrition.
