Summer sown potato from the aspect of the Hungarian specialised literature
Field crop production is carried out on around half of the area of Hungary. Only 1% of this area (19775 hectares) is used for potato production purposes. From an objective point of view, the cultivation system of potato production is less soil-focused and there are several so-called weak points, i.e., possible damages to the soil. At the same time, according to other viewpoints, potato production improves soil conditions. Within potato production, summer sown potato production is relatively well known in a specific region of Hungary, although it is less known by the public. Secondary crop production is not only a multiple utilisation opportunity, but it also serves the maintenance or even improvement of the culture conditions of sandy soils, resulting in yields where root crops or cereals can be grown with less success. The summer sown potato can be stored for long and it is used for both food and seed tuber purposes. Summer sown potato which is planted in the subsequent year shows less signs of variety deterioration in comparison with potato grown as a primary crop. Significant amount of income can be generated with summer sown potato after the winter months, but before the appearance of early potato. This study deals with the production of summer sown potato while laying great emphasis on soil preparation and cultivation which were evaluated on the basis of specialised literature data.
