Econometrics of wheat production based on a survey in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County

Wheat cultivation has been the same as the written history of human societies and has always had great importance. Its nutritional value exceeds the content of all other cereals. Hungary accounts for 0.5–0.7 percent of global wheat production. Depending on the average yield we produce 4–6 million tons of wheat on 1.1–1.2 million hectares.

In our dissertation we had examined the agriculture of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county through the opinions and experiences of farmers. We had conducted a research among organisations dealing with wheat production. The research sample was the enterpreneurial world of the county. We have gained access to them via the county’s sixty agricultural advisors from the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture. We had reached them electronically with the help of the HCA’s county office via an open ended questionnaire, and Excel Forms. We had sent and received the surveys electronically. To detect relationships we had made a correlation study with different methods. During data processing and compression we performed simple and weighted arithmetic mean and distribution ratio calculations. The closeness of the relationship between the quality criteria was examined by cross-table analysis and calculated by Tschuprow's T measure of association. The ideal and practical date of starting the research was December 12, 2018. The closing date was September 15, 2019.

In the sample, farmers operating in larger areas are characterized by negative operating income. In the sample population these are typically farmers of the Nyíregyháza district. The illustrated result based on data collected in 2017 is that wheat production is not homogeneous in terms of profitability and production cost. It can be observed that there are significant differences between districts and land sizes as well.

The profit, income and costs are related to land sizes. The average yield increased, while the average selling price decreased. This could be linked to world market and European Union processes. The downturn was already strong in 2016 and is even more observable in the data of the 2017 sample population. Primarily because of the values of the large farmers in the sample the operating income including unit income shows losses. As a result, a decline can be observed in sector results including subsidies which shows well the role of subsidies in the sample population. The four large farmers in the sample were able to make positive results with subsidies.
